News from the Historical Society

2008 was a very busy, but productive year for the historical society. After a successful plant/rummage sale, several yarn sales and a very generous donation, we were able to continue our efforts to revive our historical town hall.

Our accomplishments included removing the old fluorescent lights, ceiling tiles and the paneling to expose the wonderful beaded boards underneath. To our delight, it also revealed several boards painted black which in all probability was the original blackboard used around the turn of the century. Most of the words are still legible. We contracted a painter to give the ceiling, walls and wanes coating fresh coats of pale yellow and soft green paint. He also installed a frame around the old blackboards that were uncovered.

Our goals for 2009 include furnishing the inside to coordinate with the turn of the century time frame. Making a decision on which way we want to go with the windows is another priority and according to the research we have already done this could be quite costly but necessary. We also want to put up the old school globe lights that we purchased at an antique shop this past summer.

We're very proud of what we have already achieved in our quest and hope the rest of the community will be as well, once we are able to invite the public to view it and we began making plans to utilize it for various events.

Once again we are asking for any old pictures or data from not only this old building, but also from Apple Creek School, Sunny Corners or any other old pictures from the area with a short narrative describing them that we could borrow to copy. We would return them promptly.

We are of course always grateful for any monetary donations (which are tax deductible) and/or articles for our rummage sale. In addition, if anyone is interested in becoming a member please call Marion Van Zeeland @ 766-2226.
(Upcoming Events)
Reunion for students who attended a one room school and other interested persons to join us on Friday, April 24th from 9-11AM to celebrate Arbor Day by planting a tree to commerate the 70th anniversary (1939) of the Apple Creek School wind break plantings. Also, anyone who is interested in viewing the current progress of our historical town hall will be able to do so at that time.

Our 2009 plant/rummage sale will be held on Saturday, May 2nd & Sunday, May 3rd from 9AM to 4PM at the new town hall. Please tell your friends. Hope to see you there!!!!
